What Is GPT Image 2.6?

GPT Image 2.6 is OpenAI's latest image generation and editing model family, introduced on November 4, 2026. It focuses on faster image generation, professional visual quality, and more precise control over iterative image editing.

Unlike image generators that focus primarily on producing a single image from a text prompt, GPT Image 2.6 is designed to support the entire creative process: generating an initial visual, editing specific elements, preserving important details, and producing finished assets for digital and commercial applications.

The family includes two specialized API models:

• GPT-Image-2.6-Sunburst: Optimized for detailed visual work, higher-quality generation, and stronger consistency across successive image edits, particularly at medium and high quality settings.
• GPT-Image-2.6-Flare: Optimized for faster, interactive image generation and editing. It also improves layout quality for posters, product imagery, and other professional visual content. At low quality, Flare can generate images in as little as six seconds.

OpenAI reports that Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than its previous generation. The two variants give developers flexibility to balance generation speed, visual quality, and editing requirements without switching to an unrelated image model family.

Main Features of GPT Image 2.6

1. Faster Image Generation and Interactive Editing

Speed is one of the central improvements in GPT Image 2.6. OpenAI reports a 50% improvement in image-generation speed compared with the previous generation.

Flare is particularly useful for interactive applications where users need to generate, preview, and refine images quickly. At low quality, it can generate an image in as little as six seconds.

This makes it suitable for creative applications with repeated user interactions, such as AI design tools, product visualization platforms, and real-time image editing interfaces.

Sunburst provides an alternative when the workflow prioritizes detailed rendering and visual precision over minimum latency.

2. Higher Image Quality and Consistency Across Edits

GPT Image 2.6 improves the ability to preserve visual details during successive editing rounds.

For example, developers can start with a product photograph and request multiple modifications:

• Replace the background with a studio environment.
• Change the product's surrounding props.
• Adjust lighting and shadows.
• Modify the composition for different advertising formats.

The model is designed to preserve important visual characteristics, including product appearance, character identity, and brand details, while applying requested changes.

Sunburst is particularly suitable for these workflows because OpenAI specifically highlights its improved image consistency at medium and high quality settings.

3. Improved Professional Layouts and Visual Composition

GPT Image 2.6 brings improvements to the generation of professional visual assets, including posters, product imagery, and other structured compositions.

Flare is explicitly highlighted for improved layout quality, making it useful for applications where visual elements need to be arranged clearly and efficiently.

Typical applications include:

• Marketing posters and promotional graphics.
• E-commerce product images.
• Social media advertisements.
• Brand campaign visuals.
• Product presentation materials.

This makes GPT Image 2.6 relevant not only to individual creators but also to businesses integrating image generation into their content production workflows.

4. Markup-Guided Image Editing

GPT Image 2.6 introduces image markup capabilities to the API, giving developers more precise control over editing operations.

Instead of describing an entire image modification using text alone, users can annotate the image to indicate where changes should occur.

For example, a developer can identify a specific product component, background region, or visual element and instruct the model to modify that area while preserving the rest of the composition.

This is particularly useful for product retouching, localized image modifications, and design workflows that require precise control over individual elements.

5. Adjustable Quality and Complexity Controls

GPT Image 2.6 separates image quality from generation complexity, giving developers two distinct ways to control the generation process.

• Quality control: Determines the level of visual detail and fidelity in the generated image.
• Complexity control: Determines how much planning the model performs to satisfy the requested composition and constraints.

OpenAI recommends low complexity for most editing tasks because it can produce faster results. Medium or high complexity is more appropriate for scenes containing many objects, relationships, or detailed visual constraints.

These controls allow developers to optimize generation workflows according to their specific application requirements.

6. SVG Export and Animated GIF Generation

GPT Image 2.6 expands image generation beyond conventional static raster images.

SVG export allows developers to create scalable visual assets for websites, applications, and print materials.

Animated GIF generation enables creators to turn prompts, sketches, and existing visual concepts into animated content. Potential applications include:

• Animated brand mascots.
• Social media reactions and memes.
• Product animation loops.
• Character movement previews.
• Animated storyboards for video production.

These capabilities make GPT Image 2.6 more useful for end-to-end creative production, particularly when applications need both static and lightweight animated visual content.

When Should You Choose Sunburst?

Choose Sunburst when the output needs more detailed rendering, accurate visual elements, and consistency across multiple editing rounds.

It is particularly appropriate for:

• Professional advertising campaigns.
• Product photography and retouching.
• Character design and visual storytelling.
• Complex image compositions.
• Brand assets requiring consistent visual identity.

When Should You Choose Flare?

Choose Flare when generation speed and interactive editing are more important than maximizing visual detail.

It is particularly appropriate for:

• AI image-generation applications.
• Rapid creative prototyping.
• Real-time image previews.
• High-frequency content generation.
• Product imagery and promotional layouts requiring quick iteration.

The practical distinction: Sunburst prioritizes detailed creative output; Flare prioritizes faster creative iteration. Both use the same published token pricing, so model selection should primarily depend on workflow requirements rather than an assumed pricing difference.

Benchmark Performance of GPT Image 2.6

GPT Image 2.6 was released on November 4, 2026. OpenAI's official announcement emphasizes generation speed, editing consistency, and improved visual control rather than publishing numerical image-generation benchmark scores.

The following table summarizes the documented performance improvements.

OpenAI+1

Benchmark qualification: These are manufacturer-reported improvements and documented capabilities, not independent leaderboard results. As of November 5, 2026, the official documentation does not provide a numerical Elo score or independently verified comparative benchmark for either new variant.

For a meaningful evaluation, developers should compare both variants using identical prompts, reference images, output settings, and editing sequences. Useful measurements include generation latency, prompt adherence, text rendering, subject preservation, and cost per accepted image.

Limitations of GPT Image 2.6

Despite its expanded capabilities, GPT Image 2.6 has several practical limitations:

1. No native audio or video generation: The API model specifications list text and image inputs, with image outputs. It is not a general-purpose video or audio generation model.
2. Variable image-generation costs: Token-based pricing means the cost of each image depends on actual input and output token consumption.
3. Quality and speed trade-offs: Sunburst and Flare are optimized for different requirements. Developers should evaluate which configuration best fits their latency and visual-quality targets.
4. Complex scenes require prompt control: High-complexity compositions may require more detailed instructions and iterative refinement.
5. Editing results require verification: Developers should check text rendering, brand elements, product geometry, and unwanted modifications before deploying generated assets.
6. Safety restrictions: Image generation and editing remain subject to OpenAI's content policies and moderation safeguards.
